Sliema regained top spot in the Premier
League when they beat Hamrun Spartans 2-0. Hamrun missed a handful of
players namely Fasanelli, Paiber, Magro and Bencini whereas Marinov preferred
Casha instead of Dengaky while Kirilov returned for Hamrun.. On the other hand
Sliema made only one change from the formation that beat Valletta 2-0, Said
being preferred to Do Nascimento.
Turner was the first player who tested goalkeeper Casha inside the first minutes
of the game. Both teams failed to hold the initiative although the Wanderers
looked slightly better. But again the lethal partnership Veselji/Doncic proved
dividends in the 20th minute. The former the supplier with the Jugoslav scoring
with a precise header. The Spartans from Hamrun failed to live up to their name
and never were in the picture. Indeed it was from now onwards Sliema all the
way. On 22 minutes Brincat’s free-kick was well saved by Casha. Than Doncic shot
was blocked by the Hamrun custodian. And ten minutes from the change of ends
they doubled the score. A Grima corner was well met by SAID. More was to follow
and in the 40th minute a solo run by Turner was only stopped by a fine Casha.
On resumption Edward Aquilina drafted Do Nascimento instead of Ciantar. Play was
rather dull maybe to coincide with the weather. It was Hamrun who went near on
the hour through Bajada but his shot was well saved by Akanji. and a shot from
Sultana which surprisingly was signalled as offside by the liseman with the
scoring board blinking GOAL!!!.. Only 12 minutes from time did Sliema go
near to increase their tally but Do Nascimento’s shot was saved twice by Casha.
After all Hamrun have done well
considering that 6 of our best players where missing!!! Keep it up Reds
and never give up !
